“Mindfulness means knowing directly what is going on inside and outside ourselves, moment by moment.”
— Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre
Mindfulness.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness Skills enable us to break free from unhelpful patterns to bring about profound, positive changes in our lives. By learning how to notice thoughts and feelings we improve our well-being and other areas such as:
over-analysing
worrying
relationships
self-criticism
self-esteem
over-thinking
Low resilience
negative thoughts
There is a large volume now of scientific research to support the above findings. Mindfulness practitioners' brains change as a result of regular practice as shown in MRI scans. There are chemical changes in the body that also take place with regular practice, such as having lower levels of stress hormones, cortisol and adrenaline.
Mindfulness is recommended by the government body the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the NHS.
In this Resilience Building course, mindfulness practice will be sitting and focused on skills that enable a clear awareness of thoughts and emotions as they arise, and the skill of working with these in a non-judgemental manner. If you are new to mindfulness you may be relieved to know that for this course there will be no yoga mats, lying down on the floor or chanting!
